Cylinder Head Reconditioning

Cylinder head reconditioning process is where all the valve train components as well as the casting are machined or replaced so they meet engine manufacturer’s specification to provide levels of performance, reliability and life similar to that of the original engine. The process of reconditioning a cylinder head is as follows:

The cylinder head is fully stripped down, all components physically checked and measured, then placed in an acid bath so all the oil and carbon is removed.

The casting of the cylinder head is cracked test and then pressure tested to ensure the casting is crack free and there are no imperfections and the casting which could cause water to leak out of the casting. Afterwards the cylinder head face will be machined to ensure 100% true flatness.

The valve guides are checked for cracks, oviality, wear and replaced as required.

All the valves are checked for bend and server pitted marks on the mating surface and replaced if necessary. I the original valves are in good condition then the faces will be machined.

The valve seats are checked for damaged, excessive wear and pitted marks and replaced where necessary. If the valve seats are in good condition then the faces will be machined.

All the valves are lapped into the cylinder head seats using a special compound paste to ensure perfect compression, and then the valves are assembled to the cylinder head using brand new valve stem oil seals.

The final process is to set the valve clearances which are done by one of the following two ways. If the cylinder head is fitted with hydraulic and roller follows then these components are check and replace as required. If the cylinder head is fitted with a bucket and a metal shim either on top of the bucket or underneath then the shim has to be machined as per the engine manufacturer’s specification.

Cylinder Block Reconditioning

Cylinder block reconditioning process is where all the casting is machined so they meet engine manufacturer’s specification to provide levels of performance, reliability and life similar to that of the original engine. The process of reconditioning a cylinder block is as follows:

The cylinder block will be fully cleaned in an acid bath to remove all the oil and grease then could be in the galleries of the casting.

The casting of the cylinder block is cracked test and then pressure tested to ensure the casting is crack free and there are no imperfections and the casting which could cause oil or water to leak out of the casting.

The cylinder bores are checked for ovaility, wear and size. The bore will either be micro honed or rebred to the next suitable piston size as per engine manufacturer’s specification.

The main housing where the crankshaft is located is checked for ovaility, wear and size. The main housing will be micro honed or machined as per engine manufacturer’s specification. If there is too much wear in the main housing, then the cylinder block can be line bored.

Finally the cylinder block face will be checked for flatness and squareness and then will be machined to ensure 100% true flatness.

Crankshaft Reconditioning

A crankshaft within an engine wears with use. After a lot of miles, the play between the crankshaft and bearing becomes too much. The more play, the lower the oil pressure, the worse the lubrication. And then it wears out even faster. We can machine any crankshaft so they meet engine manufacturer’s specification to provide levels of performance, reliability and life similar to that of the original engine. The process of reconditioning a crankshaft is as follows:

The crankshaft will be crack tested for any crack and bent checked for alignment.

Once it has been determined that the crankshaft is serviceable all of the oil galleries are thoroughly cleaned.

The crankshaft will be machined to a suitable size where bearings are readily available and cracked tested again. The final process is to micro polish the crankshaft.

Connecting Rod Reconditioning

The connecting rod plays a vital role in the engine and is under tremendous stress, with the weight of the piston sitting on top, changing direction thousands of times per minute. This continuous stopping and changing of direction combined with the weight of the piston and speed of the engine hammer on the bearings and torture the rod bolts which hold everything together. The process of reconditioning the connecting rod is as follows:

The connecting rod will be cleaned thoroughly and crack tested to test for any cracks and then checked for straightness because any bend or twist in the rod may result in oil clearance problems and likely lead to a failure.

A visual inspection of the rods will also include looking for any signs of overheating, which may be indicated by a bluish appearance. If the rod has been overheated, its structural integrity may have been compromised.

The big end will be checked for size as well as the little end and where required the small end bush will be replaced.

Finally both the big end and small end will be micro polished.

Crankshaft Journal Rebuilding

Here at Bradford Grinders (UK) Ltd, we have 1 of only 3 machines available in the UK, The Gleason Crankshaft Journal Welder. If you have a crankshaft journal that is severely worn / knocked out and the crankshaft cannot be machined to a suitable size where bearings are available, as long as your crankshaft is not cracked, severely bent or twisted, why scrap your crankshaft??? We can rebuild the crankshaft journal using the Gleason Machine then re grind your crankshaft back to a standard size.

This machine is capable of doing most crankshafts of any size. Please enquire for a quotation.

Diesel Pump Testing & Reconditioning

Every diesel engine has an injector which delivers fuel into an engine by the diesel injector opening and spraying the pressurised fuel into the engine.

We have the machinery and capability of checking back leaks, pre injector values and fuel delivery and spray patterns at 3 further stages for all types of injectors whether they be mechanical or common rail such as CAV, Bosch, Delphi, Denso and Siemens.

Spark Erosion / Helicoling

Have you ever coming across a situation while either stripping or rebuild an engine and you have broken a bolt or stud. Then had a go out drilling the broken stud and bolt out and come across more problems for example you have drill offset, drilled a centre hole and tried to use an easy out or stud extractor and it has snapped inside the pilot hole, or just snapped the drill bit inside, we have a Spark Eroder which burns out the broken stud, bolt, drill bit and stud extractor and maintains the original thread.

This machine can only be used to remove broken injectors, glow / heater plugs and spark plugs. Please note that in order to carry out this process the cylinder head has to be removed from the engine and bought to our premises.

Also while you are re building an engine, have there been occasions where you have noticed bolt / stud hole threads have been stripped. In our workshop we can insert a thread insert know as a Heilcoil which will allow you to use an original bolt / stud of the same diameter and pitch thread.
